Digitized here is the content of the first newspaper titled the Japan Times, founded by a British publisher Charles Rickerby on September 8, 1865, three decades prior to the launch of today’s Japan Times.The content includes valuable articles contributed by the widely influential British diplomat Ernest Satow.Some of these articles were translated into a Japanese, printed in booklet form the year they were published, and were circulated among young samurai activists.Titled “Eikoku sakuron” (British Policy), the articles are said to have contributed greatly to the Meiji Restoration.Other articles by Satow include his translation of excerpts from the diaries of Japanese delegates to Europe.His articles offer vivid glimpses of his times.
Database of Newspapers and Journals Published in the 1912–1949 Republic of China Period (Shanghai Library Collection)
Contains Chinese and English newspapers and journals published by Zilin Yanghang, the newspaper company founded by the British merchant Henry Sherman in the latter half of the nineteenth century. Included are the North-China Herald , the North-China Daily News , the Chinese Shipping List & Advertiser , Hu bao , Han bao , Xiao xian Bao , and the North-China Desk-Hong List . Articles are searchable by title, author’s name, author’s affiliation, and newspaper/journal title. Photo captions and advertisements are also searchable.

Covering works that could not be included in CiNii, it includes 14,000 annual reports, essay collections, collections of papers from symposiums and academic conferences, and so forth, for a total of 600,000 titles. The digital archive of the Mainichi shimbun national daily newspaper (Japanese). The site allows searching for Mainichi Shimbun articles from the newspaper’s founding in 1872 to the present (up to previous day).
